Pro-immigrant bitch slap, OH SNAP!

Gate and Stairs

That populist CNN asshat, Lou Dobbs, loves to tout the "security" of the borders as THE issue on the minds of the American public. Reactionary elements in Congress and on the airwaves bitch and moan and complain about how the U.S. is somehow a bastardized version of what it once was (supposedly whiter? more German? more Italian? more English?). Listening to these cretins talk, one would think that they are tapping basic U.S. sentiment regarding illegal immigration:

"No more immigration!"

"An illegal immigrant is a criminal"

And so on, and so forth.

It's nice to see that the New York Times published an interesting article on how rational and supportive we Americans really are when it comes to immigration.

Here are some of the questions:

"Do you favor a guest worker program?"
66% say YES.

"What should happen to illegal immigrants who have been in the U.S. for at least two years?"
62% say SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO APPLY FOR LEGAL STATUS

In a nationwide survey, people realize that immigrants who come over without documentation, are NOT criminals, and are not coming to become criminals. That is a silly racist straw man that reactionaries love to use.

Rational people realize that illegal immigration is not going to stop, and that by building walls and alienating them even more will simply drive many of them farther into an already worrisome underclass.

Aren't people terrifying? It seems that more and more, people just make things needlessly complicated. How hard is it to just say yes to things, you know?

Oversimplified, I realize, but really...

I'm something of an immigration radical...firstly, I don't believe in the "right" to any piece of land.

I don't believe in a global society we can or should enforce borders which seem based on a "we were the most successful immigrants to land here so the rest can back off"(ie. the american way).

Admittedly, I don't know how to solve the issues at hand but yes, anti-immigrant types generally fall into the backwards, Hyper-nationalist/racist category all too often and thus are quite regularly the subjects of my ire.

Being as I am now in a quasi-legal grey area of sorts in my own immgration status, I can identify with a lot of the issues that "illegals" must feel(though not as directly) and I have to say, the system seems set up only to reward

1. those with money
2. those with money to pay for Ph.Ds

This in turn leads to massive need for those in things such as construction, nursing etc etc

It also bothers me whenever the news media use terms like "waves" and "influx" towards immigrants and catchphrases like "stem the tide of" as though they were referring to sewage or a tidal wave.

anyway, many random thoughts on this issue, not well organised into sentences, but see if I care :P

IM IN UR CONTINENT STEALIN UR JOBZ
